Lights night “lichtjes avond” in Bergen

Every year in the summer on a Wednesday, Bergen is turned into a town of lights.

The event started in 1926 to create extra amusement for tourists, and has since then become a tradition for the Bergenaren to lit up little lights in the town center for everyone to enjoy. Lights are placed in all kind of material and formats; glasses, lanterns. When the sun is getting down you walk in a town of beautiful lights. It’s magical to stroll around in the town center around the “Ruin Church”.

One of the Bergenaren informed me that in the past lots of houses lit up lights, not just the houses around the Ruin Church. He told me that when he was a child his father made him lit op hundreds of lights the day before “lichtjesavond”, after the lights were lit up he had to blow them out. Why? When it was time to lit up the lights on “lichtjesavond” the lights would lit up faster.

This year 2019 the Bergenaren lit up lights in their streets, houses and gardens on Wednesday 7th of August. Did you miss it? Keep an eye on next years “ Lichtjes avond” in Bergen via https://watgaanwedoen.nl/lichtjesavond-bergen.
